Whether you enjoy a drink or not, maintaining proper hydration wards off headaches, reduces grumpiness, and curbs cravings. Water doesn't have to be your only choice; herbal teas, decaffeinated options, hot cranberry juice, and similar beverages all contribute to hydration. Aim to keep most of your drinks at room temperature, as warmer beverages can boost your energy levels.
Cold drinks can strain your kidneys, making them work harder to regulate your body temperature, leading to fatigue. Given the additional stress on your kidneys during menopause, it's wise to opt for warmer drinks and, as a bonus, you'll likely need to visit the restroom less frequently!
In the evenings, combat the chill by warming cranberry juice (without added sugar) with a dash of cinnamon. This delightful concoction not only serves as a cozy drink but also offers the health benefits of cinnamon, such as blood sugar regulation. The aromatic cinnamon essence adds a Christmas touch, providing a delightful alternative to mulled wine.
Throughout the festive season, remember to balance each alcoholic drink with a glass of water. Here's an extra tip: clear spirits are gentler on your liver than wine!
Water represents the element of Winter, making it crucial to stay hydrated during this season, just as in the warmer months. Spending more time indoors with heating can lead to dehydration, and you might notice drier skin, so stay mindful and keep sipping!

Iodine is an essential mineral that is important for thyroid function, metabolism, and overall health. It is especially important for women in perimenopause and menopause because it can help alleviate symptoms related to hormone imbalance.
BENEFITS OF IODINE*
|
-
Regulates Thyroid Function: Iodine is essential to produce thyroid hormones, which regulate metabolism and energy production. Women in perimenopause and menopause may experience thyroid imbalances, which can lead to weight gain, fatigue, and other symptoms.
-
Supports Hormone Balance: Iodine helps support the production of hormones such as estrogen and progesterone. This can help alleviate symptoms such as hot flashes, mood swings, and vaginal dryness.
-
Reduces Breast Pain: Iodine can help reduce breast pain and tenderness that is often associated with perimenopause and menopause.
-
Improves Bone Health: Iodine is important for bone health, as it helps the body absorb calcium. This can help reduce the risk of osteoporosis.
|
FOODS THAT ARE PARTICULARLY HIGH IN IODINE (Listed from the highest to the lowest content)
|
-
Seaweed, such as kelp, dulse, and nori (contains the highest amounts of iodine)
-
Seafood, including fish and shellfish (such as salmon, tuna, shrimp, and oysters)
-
Dairy products, such as milk, cheese, and yogurt
- Egg
-
Iodized salt (the least amount of iodine, but still a good source)
|
*It's important to note that the amount of iodine in foods can vary depending on the soil and water content in the area where they were grown or raised. If you are concerned about your iodine levels, it may be a good idea to talk to your doctor about whether you need to take an iodine supplement.

As the days grow colder, I choose to wear woolen underwear to stay warm. However, since entering menopause, I've noticed an increased likelihood of itching in my vagina, possibly due to the additional layers. Fortunately, I discovered an excellent remedy from 'Her Juice Bar' that balances pH levels and alleviates these discomforting sensations. Check it out for yourself!

Talking about hydration: In Germany, the tradition of relishing spiced red wine, known as "GlĂĽhwein," is a beloved way to stay warm during the festive season, particularly available at Christmas markets. I still remember meeting up with friends after work over a cup of this yummy, hot drink! Today, I'm excited to share a delightful variation inspired by my colleague and health coach, Andrea Beaman: Spiced Apple Cider.
Beyond being a comforting beverage, this yummy, spiced apple cider serves as a delectable infusion of healing spices.Mulled cider functions as a "decoction," combining herbs and spices known to alleviate symptoms of flu, colds, and other prevalent viruses in the fall and winter.A decoction involves boiling and simmering herbs and spices in liquid to extract their healing properties, ideally using dried spices, fungi, roots, barks, seeds, and dried berries.
Here's a MULLED CIDER RECIPE to sip on for enhanced well-being and a speedier recovery.
Ginger:Â A rhizome that enhances circulation, adds warmth to the digestive system, and alleviates nausea and vomiting.
Star Anise:Â A seed pod rich in shikimic acid, boasting antiviral and antifungal properties, and aiding in thinning and clearing mucous from the respiratory tract.
Cinnamon:Â Inner bark of a tree utilized for kidney warming, featuring a natural antiseptic and anesthetic compound (eugenol) that combats bacteria and viruses, prevents infection, and eases pain.
Cloves:Â Dried flower buds from an evergreen tree, serving as a pain-relieving anesthetic.
Allspice:Â Berries containing eugenol, an antiseptic and anti-inflammatory infection fighter.
If you're experiencing flu-like symptoms, a cold, or another virus, incorporate these healing spices, decoct them in your preferred juice, and start sipping!
