Hair loss during menopause
Let's talk hair loss! It's a common concern for many of us, whether we're going through menopause or not. Losing hair can be emotionally distressing, but don't worry - I've got some tips to help prevent excessive shedding.
THIS IS "HAIRY STUFF"!
Just like the seasons, our hair goes through different phases of growth. During the warmer months of spring and summer, it flourishes and should stay put, while in the cooler months of autumn and winter, it tends to shed and renew itself. This is directly influenced by the amount of light we are exposed to. Unfortunately, autumn often sees a spike in hair fall - you may notice this when washing your hair or combing it, with your hands or comb coming away full of hair.
However, it's important to be mindful of excessive hair loss that occurs outside of this seasonal pattern or if you notice a visible decrease in hair density over a prolonged period. Keep an eye out for an unusual amount of hair on your pillow, desk or floor, as this could indicate a more serious issue.

WHAT ARE OUR OPTIONS FOR TACKLING HAIR LOSS?
The first step is to take a holistic approach to our lifestyle:
|
- Focus on nutrition and eating habits.
- Cut back on refined grains and sugary snacks.
- Practice intermittent fasting.
- Avoid stress!
- Make exercise a regular part of your routine.
- Address chronic inflammation, linked to increased androgens and insulin resistance.
- Avoid hair cosmetics containing toxic ingredients.
|
If you're experiencing hair loss from the front to the back during spring or summer, it could be due to increased sweating in hotter weather. In this case, taking care of your metabolism and hair as outlined above can make a big difference.
WATCH OUT WHAT YOU PUT ON YOUR HEAD!
We must also avoid over-washing our hair, as this strips away sebum and causes the sebaceous gland to produce even more. Instead, limit washing to a maximum of twice a week. At first, your hair may feel oilier than usual, but over time it will adjust and return to its former glory. Choose natural, organic shampoos, free from endocrine disruptors for best results.
I have started to do the research for you! Read on to find out what 5 common hair product chemicals you should avoid.
Sodium Lauryl Sulfate:
|
- Used as a cheap and powerful cleaning agent in hair products.
- Can cause dryness and serious health concerns if used regularly.
- Also known as ammonium lauryl sulfate and laureth sulfate.
|
Parabens (Propyl, Methyl, and Butyl):
|
- Used to prevent mold and bacteria growth and prolong shelf life.
- Can interfere with hormones, especially estrogen levels.
- May cause hair loss, irritation, and in severe cases, breast cancer.
- Look for Propylparaben, Methylparaben, and Butylparaben in hair product chemicals.
|
- Cheap and used in major beauty products for its ability to make hair look smooth and shiny.
- Harsh chemical that causes hair loss, scalp irritation, itchiness, and damage to hair cell structure.
|
- Used in various products as a preservative, including beauty products.
- Low cost and germ-killing ability make it appealing to manufacturers.
- High amounts can cause skin irritation, coughing, nausea, and cancer.
|
Diethanolamine (DEA) and Triethanolamine (TEA):
|
- Used to balance pH levels in haircare products.
- Can destroy natural oils like keratin in hair and cause hair loss, brittleness, and damage.
- An acidic chemical used to make products pH neutral.
- May be used to make consumers rely more on expensive hair products.
